What's New in CHID?

chid.nih.gov

Each quarter, NDDIC adds about 150 items to the digestive diseases subfile of the Combined Health Information Database (CHID). This database contains abstracts and ordering information on professional resources and patient education materials—such as books, pamphlets, videos, journal articles, and manuals—on a variety of digestive disease topics. Following are descriptions of three recent patient education additions to the subfile.

The pros and cons of each of the covered screening procedures (fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, screening colonoscopy, and barium x-ray) are described, along with an explanation of the Medicare benefit for each one. The brochure also defines high-risk patients and their Medicare screening coverage. An insert for health care professionals describes reimbursement codes and guidelines.

Available from the American College of Gastroenterology, 4900-B South 31st Street, Arlington, VA 22206; 800–478–2876. Price: Single copy free.

Someone You Know

This 28-minute video for consumers describes hepatitis B and its symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Interviews with chronic carriers highlight the psychosocial aspects of the disease, such as the stigma associated with it, long-term effects of constant fatigue, and concerns about infecting loved ones. Interviews with physicians emphasize prevention through immunization.

Available from the Hepatitis B Foundation, 101 Greenwood Avenue, Suite 570, Jenkintown, PA 19046; 215–884–8786. Price: $6 (for shipping).
