What's New in CHID?
Each quarter, NDDIC adds about 150 items to the digestive diseases subfile
of the Combined Health Information Database (CHID). This database contains
abstracts and ordering information on professional resources and patient
education materials—such as books, pamphlets, videos, journal articles,
and manuals—on a variety of digestive disease topics. Following are
descriptions of three recent patient education additions to the subfile.
Now Medicare Covers a Test That Could Save Your Life
This brochure describes colorectal cancer screening and new Medicare
reimbursement for it. The pros and cons of each of the covered screening
procedures (fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, screening
colonoscopy, and barium x-ray) are described, along with an explanation
of the Medicare benefit for each one. The brochure also defines high-risk
patients and their Medicare screening coverage. An insert for health care
professionals describes reimbursement codes and guidelines.

Someone You Know
This 28-minute video for consumers describes hepatitis B and its symptoms,
transmission, and prevention. Interviews with chronic carriers highlight
the psychosocial aspects of the disease, such as the stigma associated
with it, long-term effects of constant fatigue, and concerns about infecting
loved ones. Interviews with physicians emphasize prevention through immunization.

The Food Keeper:
A Consumer Guide to Food Quality and Safe Handling
This brochure provides food safety and storage advice to help consumers
maintain food freshness and quality and prevent food-borne illness. It
explains product dating and offers tips on shopping; handling food safely
at home; and refrigerating, freezing, and properly storing food. The brochure
folds out into a poster that lists guidelines for storing canned goods,
frozen and refrigerated foods, bakery items, and fresh produce.
